On a Budget
Rising global temperatures over the past century indicate that Earth’s energy budget is out of balance, with the Arctic heating up at a rate faster than the global average. But why is the Arctic warming more rapidly than anywhere else on Earth? Is there more energy from the Sun (shortwave energy) reaching the Arctic? Is the Arctic emitting more heat (longwave energy) than it has in the past? To answer these questions, students analyze and interpret the amount of incoming shortwave and outgoing longwave energy to and from the Arctic to learn more about what is causing the Arctic amplification phenomenon.
In this virtual workshop, we will review strategies for how to facilitate the On a Budget Data Puzzle in your middle and high school science classrooms. Participants will engage with the teaching materials (teacher guide, slide deck, student worksheet, and answer key) from both the teacher and student perspective and upon completion, be prepared to implement the Data Puzzle in their classroom.
Participants who complete and submit specified workshop tasks will receive a 3-hour PD certificate from the University of Colorado Boulder.
